Steph's Blog

Hey, my name is Steph , I worked at Nelson Cares doing janitorial work before I started at the ECO Store. I worked at the Eco Store through work experience and Nelson Cares. The jobs I do are filling up the bottles, making grocery bags out of clothes, taking the recycling to the office at Nelson Cares and learning how to use the cashier.I like filling up the bottles and taking the recycling to the office at Nelson Cares. I don't like getting hands dirty. I would like to find a job when I'm done school and I would like to visit my friends and the teachers at L.V.R. I can't wait until I'm done school :)

Charmaines Experience

My names Charmaine I’ve been working at eco store for few weeks, on Friday for 2 hours from 12-2pm. I’m working on a scrapbook about the eco store with my good friend Roz. Also I’ve taken pictures of some of the products and worked on taking the background off, using a program like Photoshop. I’m really enjoying working at the Eco Store with Roz, Heather. It’s calm and fun atmosphere, it’s a great experience, to be working here, and I love it.

ECO STORE IS NOW OPEN!

The Earth Matters ECO Store officially opened for business on Saturday, December 5, 2009. We are located 410B Hall Street in downtown Nelson, BC, behind the New Grand Hotel. We are excited about this new venture and the many ways it can serve the community.
The ECO Store carries four practical, innovative and earth-friendly product categories: an all-natural, all-purpose cleaning concentrate – bottled and branded locally, a variety of indoor and outdoor composting solutions, vertical and indoor gardening systems, and water cooler and filtration options for the home and office.

Earth Rescue

From 1998 to 2006 Earth Matters ran the Fruit Tree Project, which connected Nelson and area fruit tree owners who couldn't harvest all their fruit with community members who could use the fruit. In 2007, Harvest Rescue continues the work of that project but has expanded to include gleaning from backyard gardens and local farms.

This year, between July and November, Harvest Rescue will coordinate volunteers to pick fruits and vegetables that would otherwise end up as compost or bear bait, and distribute them among social service agencies in our region. Later in the summer Harvest Rescue will host community food preservation workshops.

We are a volunteer driven project. Our goal is to increase access for everyone to fresh, locally grown food, as well as reduce waste, the potential for bear-human conflict and our reliance on food requiring long-haul transportation. We hope this project will encourage local food sourcing and greater community support for our local farmers.

Harvest Rescue is a joint project of Earth Matters and the Nelson Food Cupboard Society. In 2007 it is overseen directly by the www.foodcupboard.org and funded by a Columbia Basin Trust youth grant.
